The India Meteorological Department (IMD) expects a low pressure area over the south Andaman Sea to become a depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal around 31 October, and then move west-northwestwards towards the Andhra Pradesh coast over the following two days. Its bulletin of 29 October forecasts heavy rain for coastal Andhra Pradesh on 1 November and heavy to very heavy rain on 2 and 3 November, and issues fishermen warnings from 1 November.

Heavy to Very Heavy Rain for the Andhra Coast

Gusty thunderstorms of 30–40 kmph are forecast over Andhra Pradesh on 30 and 31 October, with strong surface winds on 30 October. From 1 November, strong winds are also listed for Interior Karnataka. Telangana can expect thundersquall winds of 50–60 kmph on 1 and 2 November. Until 11:30 IST on 30 October, IMD rates flash flood risk as moderate to high in coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, naming Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam.

Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu Next in Line

Heavy rain is forecast for Coastal Karnataka, South Interior Karnataka and Kerala on 2 November, and for Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu-Puducherry-Karaikal on 3 November. Tamil Nadu and Coastal Andhra are both listed for heavy rain on 4 November, with lightning over Tamil Nadu. Coastal Karnataka is dry on 30 October. In the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, isolated heavy to very heavy rain is forecast on 30 October, with squally winds of 40–50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph over the south Andaman Sea.

A Second System in One Week

The new system comes days after Cyclone Arnab brought heavy rain to Andhra Pradesh. Our Cyclone Arnab live page and the report on Andhra Pradesh and Telangana rain after Arnab have the earlier details. IMD has not yet said how strong the new depression will become, so the rainfall figures for 1 to 3 November may change with its track. See more on our Weather Updates page.
