Cyclone Arnab will not strike West Bengal, but its outer bands will bring scattered rain and thunderstorms to Kolkata and much of the state from Tuesday, 27 October, to Friday, 30 October, the Regional Meteorological Centre in Kolkata said on Sunday. The storm, forming over the Bay of Bengal, is forecast to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam on Wednesday, more than 700 km south-west of Kolkata, and the heaviest rain in Bengal is expected in the coastal districts on 28 and 29 October.

Heavy Rain for Coastal South Bengal

South 24 Parganas, Purba Medinipur, Paschim Medinipur and Jhargram may get heavy rain on Wednesday and Thursday, with Purulia and Bankura joining on Thursday, IANS reported, citing the weather office. Kolkata, Howrah and Hooghly are forecast to get scattered rain with thunder and lightning on both days. Rain is expected to continue till Saturday in North 24 Parganas, Purba and Paschim Bardhaman, Birbhum, Murshidabad and Nadia.

From Thursday, heavy rain is also forecast in the hill and Dooars districts of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar.

Fishermen Told to Return by Tuesday

Winds along the Bengal coast are forecast at 35–55 kmph from Tuesday, with rough seas, and fishermen have been told to return to shore by then and stay off the water afterwards. Farmers with ripening aman paddy in the coastal districts face the most exposure if the heavy spells arrive as forecast.

Cooler Days After the Rain

Kolkata’s minimum on Sunday morning was 23.4°C, 0.4°C above normal, and Saturday’s maximum was 31.2°C, 0.5°C below normal. The weather office expects little change for three days and then a drop of two to three degrees as the rain sets in.
