Editorial Standards & Corrections
Accuracy
Accuracy comes before speed. We report what established news organisations, official records and people with direct knowledge have confirmed. If something is unconfirmed, we say so, or we do not publish it.
Sources and credit
Many IPB News reports are built on reporting by other news organisations and on official announcements. Every such story names and links its sources at the end, so you can read the original. We credit photographs and images in their captions.
Fairness
We present the facts without taking sides. Where a story involves criticism or a dispute, we include the response of the people or organisations involved where it is available. Opinion and analysis are clearly labelled and kept separate from news reports.
Sensitive stories
We take particular care with children, survivors of violence and people in vulnerable situations, and we follow Indian law on protecting the identities of minors and survivors of sexual offences. We avoid graphic detail that serves no public purpose.
Headlines and images
Headlines must reflect the story. We do not use misleading thumbnails or clickbait. Where we cannot use a suitable photograph, we use an IPB News section cover rather than an unrelated image, and we never present AI-generated images as real photographs.
How we use AI
IPB News uses AI tools to help find, summarise and write up news from established, credited sources, so we can cover more of India every day. These tools work to our editorial guidelines, and our editor regularly reviews what is published, correcting or removing anything that falls short of these standards. AI is never used to invent quotes, facts or photographs.
Corrections
- Factual errors are corrected in the story, with a note at the end explaining what changed and when.
- Significant errors that change the meaning of a story are noted at the top.
- We do not silently delete stories. If a story must be removed for legal reasons or to protect someone’s safety, we say so wherever we can.
- Spelling, grammar and minor style fixes are made without a note.
