Delhi recorded its lowest minimum temperature of October on Sunday, 25 October, when Safdarjung fell to 17°C after overnight rain and hail, according to India Meteorological Department (IMD) data. The rain also cleaned the air: the city’s AQI was 167 at 9 am and 153 later in the day on the Central Pollution Control Board’s Sameer app, both in the moderate band. But the official air quality forecast expects Delhi to slip back to “poor” from Monday to Wednesday.

Ridge Coldest at 16.2°C

The 17°C reading at Safdarjung was 0.2 degrees below normal, and the day’s high of 31.1°C was 0.7 degrees below normal. Among other stations, the Ridge was coldest at 16.2°C, followed by Lodhi Road at 16.4°C, Palam at 16.7°C and Ayanagar at 17.2°C. Safdarjung measured 4.4 mm of rain in the 24 hours to 8:30 am on Sunday, taking October’s total to 62.3 mm.

For Monday, IMD has forecast mainly clear skies with a maximum of about 32°C and a minimum of about 16°C.

Eleven Stations Still Poor on Sunday

Even on the cleanest day in a week, 11 of Delhi’s 54 monitoring stations stayed in the poor range, with IIT Delhi at 245 and Alipur at 233. The city-wide AQI was 191 on Saturday and above 220 for three days before that. Stage 1 of the Graded Response Action Plan has been in force since 21 October.

Another Spell of Rain Around 29 October

IMD expects another light spell of rain over Delhi on 29 and 30 October, ETV Bharat reported, as moisture from Cyclone Arnab in the Bay of Bengal meets a western disturbance. S N Mishra of the TERI School of Advanced Studies told ETV Bharat he expects the AQI to stay mostly moderate, at times poor, until Diwali on 8 November, when firecrackers could add a large load of pollutants. Earlier: Delhi AQI at 191 on Saturday and the western disturbance forecast.
