Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal face heavy to very heavy rain on 1–2 November, and Kerala and Mahe can expect heavy rain on 1–4 November, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in its all-India bulletin issued at 5:36 PM on 1 November. Karnataka is forecast to get heavy rain in places on 2–4 November. The rain is linked to Cyclone Murasu, which was about 480 km east-southeast of Chennai on Sunday afternoon and is moving towards the Andhra Pradesh coast.

Squally Winds Along the Tamil Nadu Coast

Winds of 55–65 km/h, gusting to 75 km/h, are forecast along the north Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts from 2 November. They will strengthen to 60–70 km/h, gusting to 80 km/h, from the evening of 2 November until the morning of 3 November. The IMD has told fishermen not to go out along the north Tamil Nadu–Puducherry coast until the morning of 4 November. India.com reported that isolated heavy rain is possible in the Nilgiris, Tiruvallur, Cuddalore and Villupuram.

Heavy Rain Eases in Tamil Nadu From 3 November

The IMD expects rain in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry to drop to heavy on 3 November, followed by thunderstorms with lightning on 3–5 November. The bulletin asks authorities to regulate tourism and offshore activity and tells people to avoid sheltering under trees during lightning. Farmers have been advised to drain fields and secure lodged crops.

A Second System in the Bay of Bengal

India.com also reported that a low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands could become a cyclonic storm within 24 hours. The IMD bulletin does not confirm this, so IPB will report it only if the IMD does.

Where Murasu Crosses the Coast

The IMD expects Murasu to cross the south Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Narsapur late on 2 November or early on 3 November. Our Cyclone Murasu story has the landfall details, and the weather page carries other regional forecasts.
