The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast widespread rain over Chhattisgarh on Friday, 30 October, meaning 76 to 100 per cent of the state could see showers, and heavy rain at isolated places on 1 and 2 November. Its bulletin of 29 October lists lightning over Chhattisgarh and Vidarbha on 31 October and gusty thunderstorms of 30–40 kmph over Madhya Pradesh on 30 and 31 October.

Wet Days for Chhattisgarh, Drier Skies Westwards

Rain over Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Vidarbha is rated “isolated” on 30 October, so most districts there should stay dry. East Madhya Pradesh is listed for gusty thunderstorms of 30–40 kmph on 1 November, and Chhattisgarh and Odisha for gusts of 40–50 kmph the same day. Bhuj in Gujarat recorded the country’s highest maximum temperature, 38.2°C, on 28 October. Minimum temperatures were 3.1 to 5.0°C above normal at many places in Madhya Maharashtra on 29 October.

Arnab’s Remnant Moves North

The rain in Chhattisgarh follows Cyclone Arnab. At 11:30 IST on 29 October its depression lay near 20.2°N, 81.7°E over central Chhattisgarh and adjoining Odisha, moving north at 23 kmph, and IMD expected it to weaken into a well marked low pressure area over north Chhattisgarh and northwest Odisha that evening. IMD also rates flash flood risk as moderate to high in Chhattisgarh watersheds until 11:30 IST on 30 October. Our report for 29 October covers the earlier alert.

Heavy Rain Returns on 1 and 2 November

The second spell is linked to a new low pressure area over the south Andaman Sea that IMD expects to become a depression near 31 October. Heavy rain is forecast over Chhattisgarh on both 1 and 2 November, and Telangana can see thundersquall winds of 50–60 kmph. IMD lists no heavy rain warnings for Maharashtra, Goa or Gujarat in this bulletin.
