Rajesh Kumar Singh, a 1989-batch IAS officer of the Kerala cadre, will remain India’s Defence Secretary until 31 October 2027 after the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved a one-year extension of his service on Saturday, 24 October 2026. His term was due to end on 31 October 2026; the order lets him serve until 31 October 2027 “or until further orders, whichever is earlier”, The Tribune and The Statesman reported.

Same Top Civil Servant for Defence Ministry

The decision keeps the Ministry of Defence’s senior-most civil servant in place for another year, covering a period in which the ministry is working on the proposed Defence Acquisition Procedure 2026, the rulebook for buying military equipment. Reports earlier this month cited that review in discussions about whether he would be retained. The ministry has signed several large contracts this year, including the Rs 4,106 crore deals for GSAT-7C and torpedoes.

Retirement Rules Relaxed for the Extension

The order was issued in relaxation of Fundamental Rule 56(d) and Rule 16(1A) of the All India Services (Death-cum-Retirement Benefits) Rules, 1958, which set the retirement age for IAS officers, according to The Statesman. Singh served as Officer on Special Duty in the ministry from 20 August 2024 before taking over as Defence Secretary in November 2024, shortly before his scheduled superannuation. He was earlier Secretary of the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade and of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying.

The Tribune noted that the government has granted similar extensions to other senior officials, including Cabinet Secretary TV Somanathan, Home Secretary Govind Mohan, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and Enforcement Directorate Director Rahul Navin. The order, as reported, does not give a reason for the extension.

Successor Question Moves to 2027

No successor has been named. Because the order runs “until further orders”, the government can end the term before 31 October 2027 if it chooses. Defence news from the ministry, including the Army’s new land warfare doctrine, is in Daily Updates.
