Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, 25 October, opened Arvind Limited’s new garment factory at Mirzamurad on NH-19 in Varanasi, his Lok Sabha constituency, and toured the shop floor with Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, IANS and UNI reported. The unit aims to employ about 1,000 people, most of them women from nearby villages, according to UNI and trade reports.

About 1,000 Jobs, More Than 300 Women Already Trained

Modi spoke to women workers on the lines and visited a product display, the agency reports said. More than 300 local women have been recruited and trained so far, according to ANI and the trade publication Knitting Views. The plant will make sportswear, innerwear and other garments for brands such as Jockey, US Polo and Arrow, the reports said.

An 8-Acre Site and Two Phases

The factory sits on about 8 acres and is run by Arvind Technical Products, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Ahmedabad-based textile company founded in 1931, Knitting Views reported on 15 October. Reported figures for the first-phase investment differ: ANI and Knitting Views put it at about Rs 150 crore, while a Fibre2Fashion analysis on 23 October described a Rs 100 crore unit. Arvind’s own board has approved raising Rs 600 crore through a share placement, part of which trade reports link to later phases.

Fibre2Fashion noted that the government’s list of Arvind facilities approved under the textile Production Linked Incentive scheme names sites in Gujarat and Karnataka, not Varanasi, and that it was not clear whether the new unit has received state incentives.

Production Capacity Not Yet Disclosed

The official statement, quoted by IANS, did not give an investment figure, a production capacity or a date for full commercial output. It also did not say how many of the 1,000 posts are permanent. Later on Sunday Modi was due at Namo Ghat for the Air Force’s “Wings Over Ganga” display and then in Bhubaneswar, where he is scheduled to open the RBI’s new data centre. Varanasi will also host part of Kashi Tamil Sangamam 5.0 from 28 November.
