Rahul Gandhi Challenges Modi to Open Debate on “Foreign Help” Charge

Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to an open debate on Monday, 2 November, after Modi said during a Gujarat visit that forces inside the country were spreading lies while India faced external challenges. Gandhi replied in a post on X from New Delhi, and PTI carried his remarks.

“Mr Modi, stop lying to this nation. You became PM because of foreign help. You remain PM because of foreign help,” Gandhi wrote, according to PTI. He alleged that the financial system is supported by foreigners and that foreign social media backs the Prime Minister, and added: “I challenge you to an open debate about this.” The reports do not say what evidence Gandhi relies on for these claims, and they are his allegations, not established facts.

Modi’s Remarks in Gujarat on Saturday

Modi spoke on Saturday, 31 October. According to the reports, he said some forces within the country were creating instability by spreading lies and rumours. He called the opposition an “Avrodh Paksh”, a party of obstruction, rather than a “Virodh Paksh”, a party of opposition, and said it was “shredding the boundaries of the Constitution”. ThePrint described one remark, asking who was secretly meeting whom abroad and whom “anti-India forces” were backing, as a veiled reference to Gandhi’s foreign trips. Modi did not name Gandhi in the remarks quoted by the reports.

A Row That Follows the Ramlila Rally

The exchange comes days after the INDIA bloc held its rally at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi on 1 November against the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. IPB has covered what Kharge, Tejashwi Yadav, Akhilesh Yadav and Left leaders said at the rally and the six charges the opposition laid against the CEC at its mock Parliament. Gandhi is the Congress’s face in that campaign, and Modi’s speech was made in the same week.

No Reply Yet, No Debate Scheduled

The reports carry no response from the Prime Minister’s Office or the government to Gandhi’s challenge, and no date, venue or format for a debate has been proposed by either side. Parliament’s winter session has not been announced in the reports, so the next place the two leaders could face each other on the floor is not yet known.
