Union Health Minister JP Nadda announced in New Delhi on Saturday, 24 October, that the Centre has approved 320 additional postgraduate medical seats for six government medical colleges in Himachal Pradesh, backed by a central grant of about Rs 415 crore, according to a report by ANI. The approval follows a proposal the state sent on 23 June, and Nadda asked Himachal to create the seats on a time-bound basis.
91 New Seats at Shimla, 57 Each at Hamirpur and Tanda
The 320 seats are spread across six colleges: Shimla 91, Hamirpur 57, Tanda 57, Mandi 55, Nahan 32 and Chamba 28. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu had said earlier this week that the state’s PG seats would rise from 277 to 597, Medical Dialogues reported on 19 October. For MBBS graduates in the state, that means more places to specialise in Himachal’s own government colleges.
The seats still have to be created by the state and the colleges. Nadda’s request for a time-bound timeline signals that the approval alone does not add seats for the coming admission round.

From a June Proposal to an October Approval
Nadda and Sukhu discussed the proposal on 6 October at a convocation ceremony at AIIMS Bilaspur. The seats come under a Centre-backed scheme to add 5,023 MBBS and 5,000 PG seats in existing government colleges over three years, with a total cost of Rs 15,034.50 crore, which the Union Cabinet cleared in September 2025, according to The Tribune. ANI described it as a scheme for 10,000 more seats over five years at about Rs 15,000 crore. Himachal’s other recent decisions are covered in our report on the state’s 5% DA instalment.
State Must Now Notify the Seats
No date has been announced for when the new seats will be available to students, and the reports do not say which admission round they will count towards. Readers can follow more state-level stories in Daily Updates.
