India Sends 168 Athletes as Asian Para Games Open in Japan

India has sent 168 athletes to compete in 11 sports at the Asian Para Games in Japan, which opened on Sunday and run till October 24, PTI reported. Prime Minister Narendra Modi wished the contingent well, saying India is “immensely proud” of its para-athletes and that their grit, dedication and indomitable spirit inspire 140 crore Indians.
In all, 281 members were cleared for the Games, including 168 athletes, 98 team officials and support staff, and 15 contingent staff, Asianet Newsable reported. The athlete contingent is smaller than the 303 India fielded at the 2023 Games in Hangzhou, where Indian para-athletes won a record haul of medals.
Para-sport has grown quickly in India over the past decade, with better funding, coaching and public attention after strong showings at the Paralympics. For many athletes from small towns, these Games are a chance to win recognition and support for years of training. More good news from India in IPB’s Positive News section.
