Glenn Phillips 16-Ball Century Against India? What Is Known and What Is Not

Videos claiming New Zealand batter Glenn Phillips scored a century off just 16 balls against India have been shared hundreds of thousands of times since 3 November, mostly from Pakistani X accounts. Phillips did make a hundred against India last week, and a fast one. It came off 49 balls, not 16, and a 16-ball century is not possible in cricket at all.
What the Viral Posts Claimed
The clip shows Phillips hitting sixes, ending on a scoreboard graphic that reads 100 off 16 balls. The first post, from an account whose bio suggests its owner is a journalist, said Phillips hit six sixes in an over and reached a century in 16 balls. It had more than 5.5 lakh views. A second account shared it as “two new world records”. Other posts together drew close to another 1.8 lakh views, according to a check by iVerify Pakistan published in The Express Tribune on 4 November.
What Actually Happened
False. The innings in the video is from the fourth T20I between New Zealand and India at Eden Park, Auckland, on 30 October. Phillips scored 107 off 49 balls with 10 sixes and six fours, the official scorecard shows. New Zealand made 259 for 7 and won by 87 runs after bowling India out for 172 for 9. The ICC’s match report gives the same figures.

India still won the five-match T20I series 3-2. New Zealand took the last game on 1 November by seven wickets. The ODI series began in Auckland on 4 November and runs until 15 November.
Why a 16-Ball Hundred Cannot Happen
The most a batter can score off one ball is six runs from the bat. Over 16 balls, that is 96. Extras such as wides and no-ball penalties go to the team, not to the batter’s score, so a batter cannot reach 100 in 16 balls however the over goes.
For the record, the fastest century in men’s T20 internationals is 27 balls, by Estonia’s Sahil Chauhan against Cyprus on 17 June 2024. The fastest ODI hundred is AB de Villiers’s 31-ball century against the West Indies in January 2015.
What Is Known, and What Is Not
Known: Phillips scored 107 off 49 balls against India on 30 October. The 16-ball figure was added to the clip’s scoreboard graphic.
Not known: who edited the graphic, and whether the accounts sharing it knew it was false.
