A WhatsApp message circulating ahead of Diwali says the Reserve Bank of India has warned that new Rs 10, Rs 20 and Rs 50 notes will run short during the festival season. The PIB Fact Check unit posted on X on 2 November 2026 that the claim is fake and that the RBI has made no such announcement. The short answer: there is no RBI warning behind the forward.

What PIB and the RBI Have Said

Confirmed: PIB Fact Check marked the viral message “FAKE” in its post of 2 November. It said the RBI has not issued any announcement about a shortage of these denominations, as reported by The Organiser on 3 November.

Unconfirmed: No one has produced the original message, so who first wrote it is not known. No RBI circular, press release or statement carrying the warning has been cited by anyone who shared it.

Earlier Shortage Talk Was Also Answered in Parliament

This is not the first time small notes have been the subject of a forward. In March 2026, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary told the Rajya Sabha there was no shortage of Rs 10, Rs 20 and Rs 50 notes in circulation, according to Navbharat Live. The RBI had said that low-value notes are not usually dispensed through ATMs, and that it assesses the need for each denomination and advises the government on the mix.

The same report gave the RBI’s supply for the then-current financial year up to 26 February: 439.40 crore pieces of Rs 10, 193.70 crore of Rs 20 and 130.30 crore of Rs 50. These are March figures and do not describe stock on hand this week.

What to Check Before Forwarding

Notice of any change to currency notes would come from the RBI itself, through its website or press releases. A message that cites “sources” but no RBI document should be treated as unverified. IPB has fact-checked similar currency claims before, including the viral claim about a new Rs 1,000 note. More explainers are in the Fact Check section.

Neither the RBI nor PIB has said anything further on festival-season note supply. If either does, this page will be updated.
