Mangolpuri Shoe Factory Fire in Delhi Kills 4; Owner Summoned

Four people died and two were injured in a fire at a shoe factory in Mangolpuri Industrial Area Phase-I, north-west Delhi, on Friday night, 30 October. The Delhi Fire Service received the call at about 9:32 pm and sent 20 fire tenders, fire officer Paras Kumar said. The fire started in the basement, where it was contained, but heavy smoke rose through the building and overcame workers on the upper floors. Police have summoned the factory owner and are investigating the cause.
Smoke, Not Flames, Reached the Upper Floors
Kumar said one person was brought out from the third-floor staircase and five from the fourth floor. Six people were rescued unconscious and taken to Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital, where four were declared dead. The two others are being treated. The fire has been put out and cooling work was under way, he said.
Kumar described the unit as a footwear manufacturing facility where shoes are both made and stored on the premises, which gives a fire plenty to burn and, in a basement, little way for smoke to escape.

Police Count Workers, Question Contractor
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer District) Vikram Singh said the blaze began in the basement and smoke spread upward. “The cause of the fire is being investigated,” he said. Police are questioning the contractor and workers to establish how many labourers were inside. Nothing has been made public yet about the factory’s licence, building approvals or fire clearance.
Delhi has seen repeated fatal fires this year. At least 67 people died in fires in the capital in the first six months of 2026, according to a report carried by ETV Bharat, including at least 23 in a hotel fire in Malviya Nagar on 3 June.
Cause and Licence Checks Come Next
The cause is still unknown. The fire service and police are expected to establish how the fire started and whether the unit had the required fire safety certificate. Delhi Police have not said whether any case has been registered. Read more in Daily Updates.
