Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk agreed on Thursday, 22 October, to deepen India-Poland cooperation in defence, space and nuclear energy, Modi said at a joint press meet after talks at Hyderabad House in New Delhi. Tusk is on a three-day visit to India that began on 21 October, and the two leaders also set a goal of doubling bilateral trade by 2030.
Polish Firms Invited to Co-Produce in India
Modi invited Polish companies to take part in co-development and co-production with India in defence, space and nuclear energy, and spoke of building trusted supply chains. “We have reached understanding to deepen relations in defence, space, and nuclear energy,” he said. Reports of the talks did not name any agreements or MoUs signed.
Modi said the India-EU Free Trade Agreement, once in effect, will open Poland to more Indian machinery, chemicals, plastics and engineering goods. He said he expects Polish investment in railways, mobility, advanced manufacturing, food processing and biotech. On Ukraine and West Asia, he said India “will continue to support every meaningful effort towards peace”.
Strategic Partnership Dates to 2024
India and Poland raised their ties to a Strategic Partnership during Modi’s August 2024 visit to Warsaw; an India-Poland joint statement and an action plan for 2024-2028 followed. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, this is Tusk’s second visit to India as prime minister; the first was in 2010. Modi recalled that the Jamnagar and Kolhapur royal families sheltered Polish children and families during the Second World War, and that Poles remember the Jam Saheb as “Dobry Maharadza”, the Good Maharaja. He also noted that Poland’s economy crossed $1 trillion last year and that India grew 7.8 per cent in the latest quarter.
IPB News had earlier reported on the visit schedule; more stories are in Daily Updates.
Business Forums in Delhi and Bengaluru Next
Tusk is accompanied by Poland’s Finance and Economy Minister Andrzej Domanski and a large business delegation. An India-Poland Business Forum is set for New Delhi on 22 October and for Bengaluru on 23 October, where Tusk is due to meet IT and space-sector stakeholders. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is expected to call on him later on Thursday. No joint statement from this visit had been published at the time of writing.
