Centre Approves 1.93 Lakh More Urban Homes Under PMAY-U 2.0

October 17, 2026 By IPB News Desk 2 min read

The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has approved more than 1.93 lakh additional houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana–Urban 2.0 (PMAY-U 2.0), taking the total number of houses sanctioned under the mission beyond 20 lakh. The approvals were given at the 10th meeting of the Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee in New Delhi on Friday, chaired by Satendra Singh, Secretary of the Department of Urban Development.

Which States Get the New Houses

The new houses are spread across 11 states: Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Mizoram, Odisha, Sikkim, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. Uttar Pradesh received the largest share with 73,182 houses, followed by Bihar with 52,866, Telangana with 18,120, West Bengal with 16,559 and Gujarat with 14,290.

All the houses have been sanctioned under two parts of the scheme, Beneficiary Led Construction and Affordable Housing in Partnership. They are meant for eligible urban families in the Economically Weaker Section category.

What the Scheme Offers Families

PMAY-U 2.0 was launched in September 2024 with the aim of helping one crore more urban families build or buy a pucca house. Households with an annual income of up to Rs 9 lakh, across the economically weaker, lower-income and middle-income groups, are covered. Reports on the ministry’s figures say eligible families can receive assistance of up to Rs 2.50 lakh.

For a daily-wage worker, a domestic helper or a small shopkeeper living in a rented room or an informal settlement, this help can be the difference between renting for life and owning a secure home. The ministry said about 97 per cent of houses sanctioned so far, 20.16 lakh, are in the names of women, either alone or jointly.

Speeding Up Proposals From States

At the meeting, the Secretary stressed closer coordination between the Centre, states, Union Territories and urban local bodies so that housing proposals are submitted and processed on time. Delays at the local level have often slowed the release of money and the start of construction.

Across the original PMAY-U and the new phase together, over 1.27 crore houses have been sanctioned and about 1.01 crore completed, according to the ministry’s figures. Readers can follow earlier coverage of government-funded housing for migrant workers and more in our Daily Updates section.

The real test will be how quickly the sanctioned houses are built and handed over. Families in the 11 states can check their status with their local urban body as the new projects move ahead.
