Aditya-L1 and Europe’s Proba-3 Jointly Study Solar Eruptions

October 17, 2026 By IPB News Desk 1 min read

Researchers led by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics have carried out the first joint analysis of solar eruptions observed by India’s Aditya-L1 and the European Space Agency’s Proba-3, ISRO said on Friday, October 16. The findings have been published in the peer-reviewed journal Astronomy & Astrophysics.

What the Two Missions Found

The team studied two coronal mass ejections, large eruptions of magnetised plasma from the Sun, seen on September 14 and 16, 2025. They compared data from Aditya-L1’s Visible Emission Line Coronagraph with Proba-3’s ASPIICS coronagraph. The first eruption moved at about 645 km per second and the second at about 145 km per second. Thermal energy made up only about 1 per cent of the first eruption’s total energy.

The researchers said the close agreement between the two instruments “lends confidence to the coordinated observation approach”. Proba-3 was launched on ISRO’s PSLV-XL from Sriharikota in December 2024.

Such eruptions can cause geomagnetic storms that disrupt satellites, communication and navigation. Readers can find more of India’s space story, including ISRO’s new launchpad in Tamil Nadu.
