PGIMER Doctor First Indian to Win Paediatric Neurology Trainee Award
Dr Parth Lal, a DM trainee in paediatric neurology at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, has become the first Indian to receive the 2025 Paediatric Neurology Trainee Award, the institute said. The award was presented on Friday at the 2026 Child Neurology Society meeting in Montreal, Canada.
Research on a Hard-to-Treat Infant Epilepsy
The award recognises an outstanding original research article by a trainee. Dr Lal was honoured for the NitRIS trial, published in the journal Pediatric Neurology, which gave early proof-of-concept evidence for the use of nitrazepam in children with infantile epileptic spasms syndrome, a severe form of epilepsy in babies that is often difficult to control.
For parents of affected infants, more treatment options matter because early control of spasms can protect a child’s development. In December 2025, Dr Lal also received the American Epilepsy Society’s Suzanne and Peter Berry International Travel Award, as one of two young researchers chosen from more than 1,500 submissions worldwide. PGIMER credited its Department of Pediatrics for supporting the work.
