The 12th BRICS Parliamentary Forum will be held in the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan in New Delhi on 26 and 27 October, the Lok Sabha Secretariat said in a release carried by PIB. Presiding officers and parliamentary leaders from BRICS member and partner countries will attend, and delegation secretaries meet on 25 October to finalise the Joint Statement. The theme is “Strengthening Parliaments for People-Centric Development.”
Who Is Coming
The Hindi version of the release gives the numbers as 11 member and 10 partner countries. Union ministers, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh, presiding officers of state legislatures and Members of Parliament will also take part. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend and meet the leaders of the visiting delegations, and the Vice-President will host a banquet.
Four Sessions, One Joint Statement
The forum has four high-level sessions: resilience, on how parliaments strengthen institutions; innovation, on human-centred AI and digital technologies; cooperation, on a more representative system of global governance; and sustainability, on a sustainable and inclusive future. A special meeting of the chairpersons of international affairs committees will discuss parliamentary diplomacy and capacity building.
There will be bilateral and multilateral talks, meetings with parliamentary friendship groups, parallel meetings and a cultural programme, including visits to Parliament and cultural sites in Delhi.
Joint Statement Due at the Close on October 27
The wording of the Joint Statement will be settled by the delegation secretaries on 25 October and released after the forum ends on 27 October. India holds the BRICS chair this year. Other recent official diplomacy is covered in India-Poland Talks: Modi, Tusk Agree on Defence, Space, Nuclear Push and under Daily Updates.
