The India Meteorological Department (IMD) expects a low-pressure area to form over the southeast and adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal around October 23, and it has not forecast a cyclonic storm or issued a cyclone warning, OdishaTV reported from the IMD forecast of October 20. The system starts from a cyclonic circulation over the Gulf of Thailand, Thailand and Myanmar, which the IMD said is likely to emerge into the north Andaman Sea on Wednesday, October 21. Some weather models show it strengthening into a depression, and a few show a cyclonic storm, but nothing official says so.

Heavy Rain for Andaman and Nicobar

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands get fairly widespread to widespread rain from October 20 to 26, with heavy rain at isolated places, The Economic Times reported from the IMD list. Thunderstorms with winds of 30–40 km/h, gusting to 50 km/h, are forecast for October 20 to 22. Business Standard reported that heavy rain is possible again on October 23–25. Odisha and the Northeast Stay Mostly Quiet

The IMD forecast thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds for Odisha on October 20, but it listed no rain for the state on October 21. Isolated to scattered rain is forecast over Manipur, Mizoram and Nagaland from October 20 to 22. The OdishaTV report mentions no rainfall warning for Odisha and no fishermen’s advisory. The southwest monsoon left the whole country on October 15.

Where the Low Goes After October 23

Once formed, the low is expected to move north-westwards and strengthen further. The IMD has not said where it will cross land, and a trough running from the southwest Bay of Bengal and the Tamil Nadu coast to north coastal Andhra Pradesh is already feeding rain along the southern coast; see Two Bay of Bengal Lows Likely This Week.
