India Rejects UN Expert’s Report on Indian Youth as ‘Hearsay’

India has rejected a report by UN Special Rapporteur Gina Romero that said young people in the country face retaliation or stigma for speaking about issues such as mental health and gender justice. India’s First Secretary Anuj Swarup set out India’s position during an interactive dialogue with Romero at the Third Committee of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York, reports said.
What India Said
Swarup said the report’s claim was footnoted only to unnamed submissions, and that a UN mandate holder could not generalise for 1.4 billion people on that basis. He called the report “hearsay, dressed up as a UN report” and said India’s delegation rejected it outright, The Daily Jagran and Aryan Age reported.
The report referred to a satirical youth movement in India, understood to be the Cockroach Janta Party, whose protests over exam paper leaks have led to several detentions in recent weeks.
