The Department of Animal and Sheep Husbandry held a Vishal Pashudhan Vyapar Mela for promotion of the expansion of animal husbandry activities in J&K.
It was held in the Kathua district of Lakhanpur to promote the expansion of animal husbandry activities along with attaining milk self-sufficiency in the Union Territory.
The Secretary of the Cooperatives Department, Yasha Mudgal was the guest of honor at the event, and he along with Navin Choudhary jointly inaugurated the mela.
A buyer namely Mohammad Sadiq said as quoted “Just like Punjab and other states, this mela is being organized here. Animals that help in dairy farming are here. I hope that via this project, the Union Territory gets sufficient milk production. I ham happy that the Jammu and Kashmir government has made such an arrangement,” adding to the same another localite, KK Khajuria said, “This move by the government would help in saving time and money for the farmers who would otherwise have to journey out to neighboring states to purchase excellent cattle,”
The mela, organized by the Department, is the first of its kind, encouraging the sale and acquisition of a variety of cow, buffalo, sheep, and goats. Vishal Pashudhan Vyapar MelaChoudhary highlighted the government’s recent initiatives to achieve self-sufficiency in milk production in a similar event held in Jammu and Kashmir in July this year, saying that the easing out of schemes related to Dairy Production, Animal and Sheep Husbandry received tremendous response, with over Rs. 10 crore rupees in subsidies disbursed to farmers through a variety of schemes in the previous fiscal.
He went on to say that the goal of implementing animal and sheep husbandry hand-holding programs was to make J&K self-sufficient in milk production, as the state currently imports more than 25% of its milk from Punjab and Haryana.
The ‘Two Day Vishal Pashudhan Vyapar Mela’ was inaugurated on July 21 at Sports Stadium, Hiranagar in Kathua district of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir by Principal Secretary of Animal & Sheep Husbandry Navin Kumar Choudhary. What do you think about this event?
