As Mauritius is dealing with 1,000 tonnes of fuel oil spilling in the Indian Ocean, India has dispatched over 30 tonnes of technical equipment and material by aircraft to supplement the country’s salvage operations. Also, a team of specialists to help the local authorities deal with this environmental crisis is sent which has 10 members of Indian coast guard personnel who are trained in oil spill containment measures.
The oil spilled from a Japanese ship which struck a coral reef off the Indian Ocean island nation on July 25. Removing the ship is likely to take months. This is going to affect the tourism-dependent economy of Mauritius.
