A baby Sumatran orangutan rescued in India in November 2024 was flown home to Indonesia from Gujarat on Monday, October 19, the Indian Embassy in Jakarta said. The animal arrived at Kualanamu International Airport in Medan, where Indonesia’s Ministry of Forestry held a reception attended by officials of the Consulate General of India.
The return was coordinated by wildlife agencies and the CITES Management Authorities of the two countries. The orangutan had received veterinary care and suitable habitat facilities from Indian wildlife authorities, and the Government of India waived all costs of its care before the return, PTI reported.
Five More Await Return From Odisha
Five young orangutans rescued in Odisha in September are being cared for at Nandankanan Zoological Park in Bhubaneswar. Their repatriation depends on confirmation of their species and origin and completion of procedures. The embassy is arranging a visit to India by Indonesian Ministry of Forestry wildlife experts in November to help.
The embassy said the return “reflects the close bilateral ties between India and Indonesia” and a shared commitment to protecting endangered species. More stories like this are in IPB News’s Positive News section.
